St Mary the Virgin, Shawbury

St Mary the Virgin is a Grade I parish church on Church Street, Shawbury, Shropshire, in the Diocese of Lichfield: a Norman nave and aisle with a late medieval west tower.

Overview

Historic England lists a parish church with late twelfth-century nave and south aisle, thirteenth-century chancel, north aisle rebuilt in the late fifteenth century, north chapel and tower, and a late seventeenth-century porch. Alterations and restoration are dated 1603 and 1875. The fabric is dressed red and grey sandstone and yellow-grey sandstone ashlar under plain-tile roofs. The plan has a nave and aisles of two-and-a-half bays, chancel and north chapel, north porch, and a west tower of two tall stages with a canted south-east stair turret, battlemented parapet with eight crocketed pinnacles, and a pyramidal roof cap.

The late twelfth-century south arcade has circular piers, scalloped capitals and round arches. The thirteenth-century chancel includes lancet windows. The churchyard holds Commonwealth war graves associated with nearby RAF Shawbury. A church is recorded at Shawbury in Domesday Book. The church is open 8am to 4pm, with accessible toilets and level access to the main areas.
