St Mary the Virgin, Radwinter

St Mary the Virgin is a Grade II* flint parish church at the centre of Radwinter, Essex, in the Diocese of Chelmsford, largely rebuilt by W. E. Nesfield.

Overview

Historic England records a flint church almost completely rebuilt in 1869–70 by W. E. Nesfield, who reused old materials. He left the lower stage of the fine fourteenth-century south porch and the north arcade of the nave of about 1340, and added a gabled framed upper storey to the porch. The lower porch has massive timbers and an outer arch of two carved curved brackets; the side walls have cinquefoil ogee lights. The nave roof is fourteenth-century, with tie beams, curved braces with traceried spandrels and octagonal crown posts. The west tower, with castellated parapet, angle buttresses, staircase turret and small spire, was added in 1887 by Temple Moore.

The listing grades the reconstruction with surrounding village buildings as an important work of Nesfield. Later accounts note an early sixteenth-century Flemish reredos of the Life of the Virgin, bought by the Revd Fred Bullock.
