# St Mary the Virgin, Mellor

St Mary the Virgin is a Grade II parish church on Church Lane, Mellor, Lancashire, in the Diocese of Blackburn: a Commissioners’ church of 1827–29 by Thomas Rickman and Henry Hutchinson.

## Overview

Historic England lists a church of 1825–27 by Rickman, of squared sandstone with a slate roof: a west tower, nave with clerestory and continuous chancel, and north and south aisles. Openings are chamfered lancets with hoods. The three-stage tower has angle buttresses and a stone needle spire set back behind a parapet. Aisles have six bays of paired lancets; the east window is of five lancet lights. The interior has a five-bay arcade and a west gallery. There is no chancel arch; the chancel is enclosed by a carved timber screen incorporating a pulpit on the north side.

Wikipedia records a Church Building Commission grant and a construction cost of £5,496, with the church completed in 1829. Austin and Paley restored and altered the church in 1897–99, raising the east end to form a chancel and adding a screen and choir furnishings. The north aisle has stained glass by Jean-Baptiste Capronnier. The Thwaites brewing family were patrons; many are buried in the churchyard. The church has level access and accessible toilets.
