# St Mary the Virgin, Little Dunmow

St Mary the Virgin is a Grade I parish church in Little Dunmow, Essex: the surviving fourteenth-century Lady Chapel of the Augustinian Priory of St Mary the Virgin.

## Overview

Historic England lists the church (1307038, 20 February 1967) as the former Lady Chapel of the priory founded in 1106 by Geoffrey Baynard. It is all that remains above ground after the rest of the house was demolished after the Dissolution in 1536. Walls are flint rubble and brick with limestone and clunch dressings. The south wall has four fine fourteenth-century windows; internally the east end retains niches and a reredos of about 1370. Nineteenth-century work added a north-west turret on a former tower pier, a north vestry, and a scissor-braced roof. F. Chancellor carried out restoration in 1872–73. The church is in the Diocese of Chelmsford; parish information is published with Felsted churches.
