# St Mary the Virgin, Hull

St Mary’s, Lowgate, is a Grade II* parish church in Kingston upon Hull’s Old Town, in the Diocese of York. The west tower straddles the pavement so the footpath passes beneath it.

## Overview

Historic England records a fifteenth-century church with a tower of 1697. Sir George Gilbert Scott, cousin of the then vicar, restored the church in 1861–63, adding a south porch, a minor south aisle and vestry and remodelling the tower. A further restoration followed in 1936–37. Fabric is ashlar. The plan is a nave and chancel with clerestory under a continuous roof, north and south aisles, west tower, south porch and vestry. The east end has a seven-light Perpendicular window. The four-stage west tower has a vaulted through-passage at street level.

Interior arcades have triple-moulded four-centred arches and piers with carved animal and fish capitals. Temple Moore designed the rood screen and hanging rood in 1912. The organ is by Brindley & Foster (1904). Memorials include a brass of 1525 to John Harrison and an alabaster bust to William Dobson (1666). Street widening left the west end hard against Lowgate.
