# St Mary the Virgin, Eling Hill

St Mary the Virgin stands on Eling Hill above the tide mill at Totton and Eling, a Grade II* parish church of Saxon and Norman origin, heavily restored by Benjamin Ferrey, in the Diocese of Winchester.

## Overview

Historic England records an aisleless Saxon and Norman nave and chancel with transepts, a thirteenth-century chancel restoration, a fourteenth-century south chapel, a fifteenth-century north aisle and tower, and a substantial restoration of 1863 by B. Ferrey that rebuilt the south aisle and north chapel and added south and west porches and a north vestry. The exterior is mostly Victorian flint and stone rubble; the three-stage tower is mainly Tudor and Jacobean. The interior retains thirteenth- and fourteenth-century arcading, two round arches (one early), and a small Norman window at the east end of the chancel. There are wall monuments, two by Rysbrack, and a reredos with a Venetian Last Supper of apparent early sixteenth-century origin. Heritage Gateway notes strong evidence that Eling was a minster, tied to the royal estate recorded in Domesday. The church was listed Grade II* on 8 October 1959 (NHLE 1094344). The legal parish is Marchwood and Eling (also associated with the Team Parish of Totton).
