# St Mary the Virgin, East Worldham

St Mary the Virgin is the Grade II* parish church of East Worldham, a South Downs village east of Alton in Hampshire, in the Diocese of Winchester.

## Overview

The fabric is thirteenth-century Early English: a nave with lancets and deep roll-moulded reveals, a short chancel (the former apse removed), and a western timber bell turret with a shingled spire. North and south nave doorways have deeply moulded arches on recessed shafts. David Brandon restored the church in 1865, adding a small vestry and south porch while rebuilding much of the nave to the original design. A medieval tomb recess in the south wall of the nave holds a female effigy traditionally associated with Philippa Chaucer. There are seventeenth- and eighteenth-century wall monuments and a Victorian font. Stained glass includes work by Hardman & Co. Magdalen College, Oxford, is patron of the living.
