St Mary the Virgin, Carlton-on-Trent

St Mary the Virgin is a Grade II* parish church on Church Street, Carlton-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, a Decorated Gothic Revival church of 1849–51 by George Gordon Place, in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham.

Overview

A medieval chapel-of-ease to Norwell stood here, with Norman fabric later altered; a painting records substantial eighteenth-century work. That chapel was demolished in 1849. John Vere paid for the present church, built in 1849–51 by G. G. Place of Nottingham (buried in the churchyard). Historic England records an early fourteenth-century revival design: dressed stone with ashlar dressings and slate roofs, west tower and crocketed spire, nave with north and south aisles, chancel, vestry and south porch. Survivals from the earlier church include the Transitional south doorway of about 1200, a fourteenth-century window in the north chancel wall, and a bellframe tree-ring dated to 1547. The church was listed Grade II* on 11 August 1961 (NHLE 1178592). It is in a joint parish with Sutton-on-Trent and Normanton-upon-Trent.
