# St Mary the Virgin, Calton

St Mary the Virgin is a Grade II parish church on Back Lane, Calton, in the Staffordshire Moorlands, in the Diocese of Lichfield.

## Overview

Historic England lists the building as a chapel-of-ease of 1839: a four-bay nave with south porch, single-bay chancel and north-west vestry, in coursed and squared limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings and a plain-tile roof with coped verges. Pointed windows include a Y-traceried east window. The gabled south porch has a pointed door and a niche with a statuette of the Virgin; a weather-boarded bellcote has a hipped roof.

The interior has a pointed chancel arch on moulded imposts, a west gallery on cylindrical cast-iron columns with an arcaded rail, plaster ceilings and cased beams. Fittings include an octagonal stone font with quatrefoil panels and fleurons, a semi-octagonal wooden pulpit, and a seventeenth-century communion rail heavily carved with foliage, a piece of which hangs on the south wall. A Grade II sundial stands about ten yards south of the church.
