# St Mary & St Nicholas, Beaumaris

The parish church of St Mary and St Nicholas stands between Church Street and Steeple Lane in Beaumaris, a Grade I medieval church founded about 1330 to serve Edward I’s new borough.

## Overview

Built as a chapel of ease within a generation of the 1296 plantation, the church received an embattled parapet and Perpendicular windows in the early sixteenth century. John Hall of Bangor repaired it in 1825 and rebuilt the upper stage of the tower. G. F. Bodley restored roofs and windows in 1902 and removed nineteenth-century galleries. Fifteenth-century misericords, among the finest in North Wales, are thought to have come from Llanfaes Friary at the Dissolution, as did the stone coffin traditionally associated with Princess Joan (Siwan), wife of Llywelyn the Great. The church is in the Diocese of Bangor.
