Overview
There was a large church here by the late twelfth or early thirteenth century: the tower base and parts of both aisles belong to that fabric. The chancel was rebuilt in the late thirteenth century; the nave, clerestory, aisles, chapels, porches and upper tower followed about 1330. Butterfield restored the church in 1858 and 1876–77, renewing windows and recladding the nave, aisles and tower in Bath stone. The north-west vestry was rebuilt on old foundations in 1912.
The five-light east window has intersecting cusped Decorated tracery. Tall fourteenth-century nave arcades have complex moulded piers. The Trumpington tomb of about 1330, set in the north chapel arcade, carries one of the finest brasses in England, a man in chain mail long associated with Sir Roger de Trumpington. The lower part of a fifteenth-century rood screen survives, as does a late-fifteenth-century octagonal font. Reset medieval glass includes a thirteenth-century heraldic panel probably for Edmund Crouchback. The pulpit, given in 1677 by Thomas Allen, came from Emmanuel College, Cambridge.
