# St Mary & St Andrew, Pentwyn Fochriw

St Mary and St Andrew is a Church in Wales church on the mountain top at Pentwyn, Fochriw, in the Taff Rhymney Ministry Area. A chancel was added to a schoolroom and opened for worship in 1864; the burial ground was consecrated in 1866.

## Overview

The National Churches Trust and local accounts describe the present building as the survivor of two churches. The schoolroom has been demolished and the chancel renovated. Construction of a larger replacement, St Mary’s, nearer Fochriw began in 1907; that church was demolished in 1981, leaving the Pentwyn building — long known as St Andrew’s — still in use. In 1907 the Merthyr Express called it a building that had served the neighbourhood for many years, ‘situated right away on the mountain top at Pentwyn. A cold, bleak, unsheltered spot’.

No Cadw listing, named architect or detailed fabric description has been verified. The church remains an active place of worship in the Church in Wales, with clergy listed for the Taff Rhymney Ministry Area.
