# St Mary, Ruabon

St Mary's is a Grade I Church in Wales parish church between Bridge Street and Church Street in Ruabon, Wrexham, in the Diocese of St Asaph: a medieval church substantially rebuilt in 1870-72 by Benjamin Ferrey for Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn, and listed with its churchyard walls and lychgate.

## Overview

Cadw lists the Church of St Mary, including churchyard walls and lych gate (reference 1622, designated 7 June 1963). The church at Ruabon is recorded in 1253, then dedicated to St Collen. Cadw notes a fourteenth-century west tower and some Perpendicular work; a south-east chapel of 1755 and a north-east chapel of 1769; remodelling by T. F. Pritchard of Shrewsbury in 1769-70; and a substantial rebuild of 1870-72 by Benjamin Ferrey of London for Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn, 6th Baronet, of Wynnstay Hall. The nave arcade, clerestory, aisles and most windows date from Ferrey's phase. Fabric is sandstone rubble and ashlar under a slate roof. The three-stage fourteenth-century tower has diagonal buttresses, a west door, two-light bell openings, an embattled parapet and a stair turret.

Cadw lists the church at Grade I for its medieval elements, furnishings of interest and an important group of monuments, including work by Nollekens and pieces attributed to Adam, and a fifteenth-century alabaster tomb chest of John ap Ellis Eyton and his wife Elizabeth in the north chapel. Stained glass is mainly by Ward and Hughes. The parish is in the Mission Area of Offa.
