St Mary, Ripple

St Mary's is a Grade I parish church at The Cross, Ripple, Worcestershire, in the Diocese of Worcester.

Overview

Historic England records a late twelfth- to thirteenth-century stone church of nave, aisles, transepts, crossing tower and chancel. The six-bay nave of about 1200 has a clerestory and renewed quatrefoil piers. East, north and south doors have stiff-leaf capitals. The west window is Perpendicular. Early thirteenth-century keeled east and west crossing arches have stiff-leaf carving. The crossing tower is fifteenth-century, rebuilt at the top in 1713 with a balustrade of 1797. The late thirteenth-century chancel has red sandstone three-light windows with moulded rear arches and a Perpendicular east window.

Exceptional fifteenth-century stalls have sixteen carved misericords. A tablet to the Revd J. Holte dated 1734 is by Thomas White. The east window of 1908 is by H. W. Bryans; the west window of 1885 is by C. E. Kempe. Jacobean communion rails survive.
