Overview
Historic England records a knapped-flint church of chancel, nave with aisles, and a tower in the centre of the south aisle whose ground floor forms a porch, under a broached shingled spire. The chancel, nave, tower and south aisle west of the tower are late twelfth-century; the spire is thirteenth-century. The church has an especially fine Norman south doorway and a good Norman priests' doorway, and a rare east wheel window with cylindrical spokes. The east end of the south aisle, the Bifrons Chapel, was rebuilt in the fifteenth century. The north aisle was added in 1824.
The listing states that the first Marchioness Conyngham paid for a drastic restoration: the chancel in 1849 by Mr Marshall of Canterbury, and the nave, tower and aisle in 1857 by Sir George Gilbert Scott. Some windows contain sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Swiss glass given by Lady Conyngham in 1837. Kent HER notes an alien priory cell of Austin canons founded here about 1200. The Church Heritage Record places the parish in the Bridge Group.
