# St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich

St Mary Magdalene is a Grade II* parish church on St Mary Magdalene Crescent, Woolwich, in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the Diocese of Southwark.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of 1727–39 by the Deptford bricklayer Matthew Spray; the architect is unknown. The east end was rebuilt and extended with transepts in 1893–94 by J. O. Scott. The main body is a stock-brick Georgian building of nave and aisles partly embracing a four-stage west tower, with Portland stone dressings, a heavy stone cornice and gauged red-brick arches. First-floor windows are round-arched; ground-floor windows are segment-headed. Scott's east end continues the classical manner, with a Venetian east window and one-bay transepts.

Wikipedia states that the church was dedicated on 9 May 1740 and belongs to the parish of Woolwich St Mary Magdalene with St Michael and All Angels. The Church Heritage Record confirms the Diocese of Southwark and Archdeaconry of Lewisham and Greenwich. The building stands on a hill above the Thames and is one of Woolwich's principal Georgian landmarks.
