# St Mary Magdalene, Whiston

St Mary Magdalene is a Grade II* parish church off School Hill, Whiston, Rotherham, in the Diocese of Sheffield. Historic England records a twelfth-century west window reset in the tower, a thirteenth-century south doorway, a fifteenth-century south wall, and an extensive rebuilding of 1881–83 by John Oldrid Scott.

## Overview

Scott added a new nave and chancel to the north of the old axis; the former three-bay nave and two-bay chancel became the south aisle and chapel. Materials are rubble sandstone for the earliest work, ashlar for the fifteenth century, and dressed sandstone for the Victorian work, with Welsh slate and lead roofs. The south-west tower has a lancet west window, an embattled parapet with crocketed pinnacles and a tiled pyramidal roof.

The C19 north wall of the nave has four three-light windows; paired west doors have pointed arches and foliage-carved spandrels. The church remains the Anglican parish church of Whiston, south-east of Rotherham town centre.
