# St Mary Magdalene, Latimer

St Mary Magdalene is a Grade II parish church in Latimer village, Buckinghamshire, in the Diocese of Oxford.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of about 1841 by Edward Blore, enlarged and altered by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1867 with an extra nave bay, north and south transepts, chancel apse, vestry and organ chamber. The fabric is red brick with slate roofs and some stone dressings. The east apse is Early English, with a blind arcade pierced for three lancets. Nave lancets are separated by shallow stepped buttresses. The south transept has an octagonal turret with a spirelet. Inside, the chancel and apse arches have naturalistic foliage. There is an alabaster altar surround and a canted wooden roof on corbels carved with wild flowers. Stained glass is by Clayton and Bell in the apse and Powell and Sons of Whitefriars on the nave north side, both of 1873, and by Kempe, about 1892, in the south transept. Monuments of 1632 and 1706 survive from the earlier chapel.

Buckinghamshire HER states that the 1841 church stands on the site of St James's Chapel, formerly dependent on Chesham. Scott's uncle had been rector of Latimer and Flaunden.
