# St Mary Magdalene, Campsall

St Mary Magdalene is a Grade I parish church on the High Street at Campsall, South Yorkshire, in the Diocese of Sheffield: an ambitious Norman church with work of every later medieval century.

## Overview

Historic England lists a church of the twelfth to fifteenth centuries in rubble and ashlar magnesian limestone, with lead and stone slate roofs. The cruciform plan has a west tower overlapped by aisles to a four-bay nave with south porch, and a three-bay chancel. The tower is the showpiece: a restored twelfth-century west doorway with a four-order round arch, scalloped capitals and zig-zag, a five-arch blind arcade above, and a Perpendicular embattled parapet. Parish history states that the present church was established towards the end of the eleventh century, originally planned as cruciform before the western tower was developed.

Interior fittings include a seventeenth-century octagonal pulpit, a richly carved rood screen, and an altar by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin in the south transept, brought from Ackworth. Yarborough family monuments include an 1803 wall monument to Thomas Yarborough by John Flaxman. Eight bells and a new clock were installed in 1879. Local tradition associates the church with the marriage of Robin Hood and Maid Marian; that claim is legendary rather than documented. The church is on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register.
