# St Mary, Llanwern

St Mary’s is a Grade II* Church in Wales parish church at Llanwern, Newport, on the lane from the village to Bishton, immediately north of the former Spencer steelworks. It is in the Diocese of Monmouth and the Netherwent Ministry Area. (The church stands in historic Monmouthshire, not in Wrexham.)

## Overview

Cadw describes an aisleless single-cell church with south porch and a broad three-stage west tower, probably fourteenth-century and re-fenestrated and enlarged in the fifteenth. Construction is coursed liassic limestone rubble with pink sandstone dressings and random blocks in the limestone walls, under a natural slate roof. The east window is three-light with cusped heads and debased Decorated tracery. The north side is unlit. The tower has an embattled parapet, five angle buttresses, a canted north-east stair turret, and two-light louvred belfry windows with quatrefoils in plate tracery. The west window is three cusped lights with Perpendicular tracery; the west doorway is fifteenth-century, obtusely pointed, with complexly moulded jambs.

A medieval churchyard cross in the churchyard is a scheduled monument. Cadw lists the church at Grade II* for its medieval origins and surviving internal detail.
