St Mary, Kyre Wyard

St Mary’s is the Grade II* parish church of Kyre (Kyre Wyard), Worcestershire, a small Norman church beside Kyre Park, in the Diocese of Worcester.

Overview

The nave and chancel date from the early twelfth century and are built out of line, the chancel inclining to the north. An early fourteenth-century south chapel was added when the roofs were replaced and eastern buttresses built. The listing records sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, fourteenth-century collar-rafter roofs, a twelfth-century circular font, and a timber bell-turret of about 1700 over the west end of the chapel. The original chancel arch was widened in 1833; a timber-framed west porch was added in 1894. A nineteenth-century cloister links the church to Kyre Park house.

Interior fittings include sixteenth-century oak pews, a seventeenth-century altar table, altar rails of about 1750, and Pytts family monuments in the chancel. Fourteenth-century wall painting survives on a chapel window jamb. The church was listed Grade II* on 18 April 1966 (NHLE 1179365).
