St Mary, Herbrandston

St Mary’s is a Grade II Church in Wales parish church on the east side of the village green at Herbrandston, Pembrokeshire, in the Diocese of St Davids: a medieval church carefully restored in 1902–04.

Overview

Cadw lists the Church of Saint Mary (reference 82591, designated 4 March 2004). The medieval church has a short fifteenth-century west tower, later lowered, a nave with north and south porches, and a chancel with side recesses of a type also found at Johnston. The fifteenth-century tracery of the east window appears original. C. Ford Whitcombe of Worcester restored the church in 1902–04, reroofing it, adding or replacing wooden windows in grey stone, and refitting the interior. A reredos of 1927 is by J. Coates Carter. An estate map of 1740 shows a low battlemented tower at roughly the present height and a nave east bellcote; the tower bell-frame is dated 1770.

The exterior is red sandstone rubble with slate roofs. Coflein notes two small carved medieval corbels over the porches and a fourteenth-century incised tomb slab in a recess. The font has a twentieth-century bowl on a medieval scalloped base. The church is open daily, about 9am to 6pm, with level access to the main areas.
