# St Mary, Hanley Castle

St Mary’s is a Grade II* parish church at Church End, Hanley Castle, Worcestershire, in the Diocese of Worcester.

## Overview

Historic England dates the church to the early fourteenth century and 1674, restored in 1858 by Street. The tower, chancel and north chancel aisle are of brick with a tile roof. The plan is an aisled nave and chancel, north chancel aisle, north and south porches, and a central brick tower. The inner south doorway is twelfth-century, with a round arch and angle shafts with cushion capitals. The fourteenth-century font has an octagonal limestone bowl carved with foil and flower decoration.

The parish and National Churches Trust record that after Civil War damage Sir Nicholas Lechmere rebuilt the east end in brick in 1674, including a chapel and the central tower. A later Bishop of Worcester, Godfrey Giffard, dedicated a new altar in 1290 at the start of the fourteenth-century enlargement. The listing NGR is SO8388241940.
