# St Mary, Handsworth

St Mary the Virgin is a Grade II parish church on Handsworth Road in Handsworth, Sheffield, in the Diocese of Sheffield.

## Overview

Historic England records a parish church and attached chest tombs with late-twelfth-century fabric, a north chapel (St Katherine) of about 1300, a nave of about 1472, a north aisle of 1833, and a south aisle, south porch and vestry of 1904 by John Dodsley Webster. The west tower is late twelfth-century, its upper stages rebuilt in 1825. Restorations followed in 1869 by M. E. Hadfield, 1880 by J. B. Mitchell-Withers, and 1934; a choir vestry was added in 1930. The fabric is coursed squared stone and random rubble, with slate and lead roofs and a shaped plain-tile roof to the chancel.

The chancel east end has three graduated single lancets. Below, a mid-nineteenth-century railed enclosure holds four chest tombs dated 1658, mid-nineteenth-century and 1889. The north chapel has a restored three-light east window with intersecting tracery. Wikipedia notes a ring of eight bells recast by John Taylor & Co in 1920 and a service bell of 1590 by Henry II Oldfield of Nottingham.
