# St Mary, Ennerdale Bridge

St Mary’s is the Church of England church at Ennerdale Bridge, Cumbria, in the parish of Lamplugh with Ennerdale and the Diocese of Carlisle. It is not a listed building.

## Overview

The Church Heritage Record notes a late medieval chapel of ease on the site, recorded in 1534 and built by St Bees Abbey. The present church replaced that chapel at the behest of the vicar William Dukes in 1856 and was completed and consecrated in 1858. Charles Eaglesfield of Maryport designed it in Romanesque style.

Pevsner is cited for dog-tooth carving over the entrance porch and chancel arch, a small section of which is thought to be Norman and to have come from the replaced chapel, and originally from St Bees. The church stands beside the River Ehen and Rowland Beck, on the Coast to Coast route through the village. The older churchyard has burials from 1741 to 1900; a later burial ground lies south of Church Lane.
