Overview

St. Mary's Church, located near the Stanlow refinery, was locked and overgrown during a visit in April 2023. Mentioned in the Domesday Book as Torentune, the site had a church and a priest. A fragment of a 10th or early 11th-century Anglo-Saxon cross was found in the church in 1982 and is now in the Grosvenor Museum.

Historically known as St. Helen's, the church is built from red Cheshire sandstone. The current structure dates mainly from the 14th and 16th centuries, with the 16th-century tower rebuilt in 1910 after a fire. Before 1861, the church served several townships, but new churches were built in Dunham Hill in 1861 and Hapsford in 1891, forming a separate parish.

The Victorian restoration of 1878 replaced most roofs with pitch pine, except for the original oak hammer-beam roof in the chancel. The church contains monuments to the Bunbury, Cottingham, Gerard, and Harwood families.
