# St Mary, Chirk

St Mary’s is a Grade I Church in Wales parish church at the south end of Church Street, Chirk, Wrexham, on the north edge of the Ceiriog valley, in the Diocese of St Asaph.

## Overview

Cadw records that the church was first dedicated to St Tysilio. The early-twelfth-century nave and chancel were of similar length to the present building, perhaps serving the early lordship of Chirk; an older llan is believed to have occupied the site. In 1519 William Edwards of New Hall added a parallel north nave of equal size, shortly followed by the west tower in its west bay. The church was repaired through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and after 1811; the interior was remodelled in 1828–29, and furnishings were altered in 1877 by E. Griffiths of Chirk under Henry Kennedy.

Cadw lists it at Grade I (reference 615) for early fabric, late-medieval carved roofs, and an outstanding group of eighteenth-century monuments to the Myddelton and Trevor families of the local estates. A later twentieth-century hall is attached to the north.
