# St Mary, Boyton

St Mary's stands beside Boyton Manor in the Wylye valley, Wiltshire. It is a Grade I parish church in the Diocese of Salisbury and the Upper Wylye Valley Team, notable for the late thirteenth-century Giffard Chapel.

## Overview

Historic England lists an Anglican parish church of the late thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, restored in 1860 by T. H. Wyatt, of flint and limestone chequers under an ornamental tiled roof. The plan is nave, south chapel of about 1280, fourteenth-century north transept, two-stage fifteenth-century north tower with the entrance, north-west vestry and chancel. The north doorway has a late thirteenth-century arch with dogtooth ornament. The Giffard Chapel has a trefoiled piscina, triple sedilia, deeply splayed windows and a two-bay arcade to the nave. Britain Express and Wiltshire Community History describe the chapel as a memorial to Sir Alexander Giffard, built by his brothers Walter (Archbishop of York) and Godfrey (Bishop of Worcester), with a circular west window about twelve feet across in geometric tracery and an effigy of a knight.

Wikipedia records a church at Boyton in the twelfth century; Wyatt's 1860 work included new roofs throughout. Further restoration took place in 1956–60. The church is normally open.
