St Mary, Arnold

St Mary’s is a Grade II* parish church on Church Lane in Arnold, Nottinghamshire, in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham.

Overview

Historic England records a parish church of the twelfth to fifteenth centuries, with a vestry of 1839, restored in 1868 by Scott and again in 1877 and 1923. The fabric is coursed and squared rubble and dressed stone with gabled and lean-to slate roofs. The plan has a west tower, nave, north and south aisles, organ chamber, chancel, vestry and south porch. The tower, of the fourteenth and mid-fifteenth centuries, has two stages, a plain parapet with four pinnacles and four pairs of corner buttresses. The fifteenth-century clerestory, restored in the nineteenth century, has a crenellated parapet and Tudor-arched double lancets.

The Nottinghamshire HER, following Pevsner, notes early-fourteenth-century nave arcades, a mid-fourteenth-century chancel, a tall fourteenth-century Easter sepulchre (badly preserved and stripped of sculpture), and a Perpendicular west tower partly rebuilt in Scott’s 1868–69 restoration. Wikipedia adds a further restoration of 1877 under Richard Charles Sutton and estimates origins in the late twelfth century.
