# St Mary of the Angels, Brownshill

St Mary of the Angels is a Grade II former Roman Catholic church at Brownshill, overlooking the Golden Valley in Gloucestershire. It was designed by W. D. Caröe and is vested in the Friends of Friendless Churches.

## Overview

Historic England lists the church (1392073, 12 July 2007) as a Romanesque church of 1930–37 by William Douglas Caröe for the Templewood community, with stained glass of about 1938 by Douglas Strachan. It is of local limestone under a Cotswold stone slate roof, with a shingled timber bellcote and a continuous concrete barrel vault. Bertha Kessler and Katherine Hudson, former First Aid Nursing Yeomanry nurses, founded the community in 1927 to offer spiritual healing after the First World War and paid for the chapel from their own savings. Caröe died a year after the 1937 consecration. The church passed to the Friends of Friendless Churches in 2010, their first Roman Catholic vesting.
