# St Mary, Adderbury

The Church of St Mary on Mill Lane and the High Street, Adderbury, Oxfordshire, is a Grade I cruciform parish church in the Diocese of Oxford, with a Perpendicular chancel built for New College.

## Overview

Historic England records early thirteenth- and early fourteenth-century fabric; a chancel and vestry of 1409–19 by Richard Winchcombe for New College, Oxford; chancel restoration about 1831 by J. C. Buckler; nave restoration about 1866 by Sir George Gilbert Scott; and further work in 1886 by John Oldrid Scott. Materials are marlstone rubble and ashlar with limestone dressings and lead roofs. Winchcombe’s three-bay ashlar chancel has Perpendicular windows, crocketed pinnacles and a two-storey vestry; the head of William of Wykeham and the arms of New College sit above the east window. The fourteenth-century aisles carry carved friezes of grotesques, animals and musicians. A fifteenth-century rood screen was restored and given a loft by Scott. Listed Grade I on 8 December 1955 (NHLE 1200012).

Building accounts survive for the New College chancel. The parish is Adderbury, in the Deddington deanery.
