St Martin, Welton le Marsh

St Martin’s is a Grade II* parish church on Church Lane (Mill Lane), Welton le Marsh, Lincolnshire, in the Diocese of Lincoln: a late eighteenth-century brick rebuild on a medieval chalk base, open daily from 9am to 5pm.

Overview

Historic England lists the church (1063626, Grade II*, 3 February 1967). The listing describes a parish church with a medieval base, rebuilt in the late eighteenth century and altered in 1891, in coursed squared chalk to the base of the walls, red brick in English bond, ashlar dressings and a concrete tiled roof. The plan is a three-stage western tower, nave, chancel and vestry. The tower has an offset plain parapet with corner lead pinnacles, semi-circular headed louvred belfry lights, and a west doorway with a semi-circular head and ashlar keystone. Nave sides have two two-light nineteenth-century windows with cinquefoil tracery. The east window is of three lights with Gothic tracery and a circular light in the gable.

The interior retains a fifteenth-century octagonal crenellated font and a late eighteenth-century font. Lincolnshire Heritage Explorer notes that the church was rebuilt before 1792 and that Pevsner records a fourteenth-century font bowl. Level access is available throughout.
