# St Martin of Tours, Womersley

St Martin is a Grade I cruciform parish church on Park Lane, Womersley, North Yorkshire.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of twelfth-century origins with a thirteenth-century nave and north aisle, later transepts, crossing tower and broach spire, and a chancel with north vestry, restored by Bodley in 1895. The fabric is Magnesian limestone rubble and ashlar. The plan is cruciform: aisled nave, crossing tower, single-bay transepts and a chancel. The tower has two-light bell openings with geometrical tracery and a broached spire.

Inside, the listing describes a two-bay south aisle arcade on octagonal piers and a five-bay north arcade. Later accounts attribute the complete Victorian Gothic interior — decorated ceilings, fittings and glass — to George Frederick Bodley, commissioned by Frances Cassandra, Countess of Rosse, of Womersley Hall. A fourteenth-century effigy of a member of the de Newmarch family stands near the font. The church is open in daylight hours.
