# St Martin with St Wilfrid & St Alban, Brighton

St Martin’s, Lewes Road, is a Grade II* Gothic Revival parish church in the Round Hill area of Brighton, the largest church in the city by capacity, in the Diocese of Chichester.

## Overview

Historic England dates the church to 1872–75 by George Somers Clarke Junior, built for the three sons of the Reverend Henry Wagner in memory of their father. The listing describes yellow brick in English bond with red brick, stone and terracotta dressings and a tiled roof: chancel and nave under one roof, north and south aisles, south-west porch and a bellcote. The gabled porch has a terracotta relief of St Martin and the Beggar. The west end has five closely spaced lancets with a stepped five-light composition above.

Wikipedia records that the Wagner brothers offered either a limited gift on a committee site or the full cost on a site they chose; the committee accepted the Lewes Road site north of Elm Grove. The parish title now includes St Wilfrid, St Alban and St Richard Hollingdean. The church is listed Grade II* (1381667, 20 August 1971).
