# St Martin on the Hill, Scarborough

St Martin-on-the-Hill is a Grade I parish church on Albion Road, Scarborough, in the Diocese of York, an early and exceptionally fine church by G. F. Bodley with decorations by Morris & Co.

## Overview

Historic England records a parish church of 1861–62 by G. F. Bodley, largely ashlar faced in the Gothic Revival style. The plan has a tall tower at the north side of the east end with a saddleback roof, a nave with high clerestory, aisle and chancel, a large west rose window and side porches. The interior is lofty, with a wooden wagon roof. The church was commissioned by Mary Craven and consecrated in July 1863.

The listing states that decorations and stained glass are by Morris & Co., one of the firm’s earliest major commissions. The pulpit has ten painted panels by D. G. Rossetti, Ford Madox Brown and William Morris. The chancel ceiling is by William Morris and Philip Webb. The altar wall has blind bar tracery by Bodley containing Burne-Jones’s Adoration of the Magi. The reredos and rood screen of 1889 are by Bodley, as is the large organ case, with paintings by Spencer Stanhope. The church was damaged in the German bombardment of Scarborough on 16 December 1914.
