# St Martin in the Bullring, Birmingham

St Martin in the Bull Ring, on Edgbaston Street beside the Bull Ring, is Birmingham’s mother church, a Grade II* sandstone church of late thirteenth-century origin, rebuilt in 1873–75 by J. A. Chatwin, in the Diocese of Birmingham.

## Overview

Historic England records a church at least late thirteenth-century in origin, the mother church of Birmingham, of sandstone, with nave and aisles, tower and spire. It was repaired in the late seventeenth and late eighteenth centuries. P. C. Hardwick restored the tower and spire; in 1873–75 the rest of the church was demolished, rebuilt and enlarged with transepts and an extended east end under J. A. Chatwin. It was restored after bomb damage in 1956–57. Inside are recumbent effigies of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and a south-transept window designed by Edward Burne-Jones and made by Morris, 1875–80. Listed Grade II* on 25 April 1952 (NHLE 1075690). The legal parish is St Martin-in-the-Bull-Ring, Birmingham.
