# St Mark, St Johns Wood

St Mark’s, Hamilton Terrace, is a Grade II* Decorated Gothic church in St John’s Wood, City of Westminster, in the Diocese of London. A fire on 26 January 2023 gutted the interior; the tower and outer walls remain.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of 1846–47 by Thomas Cundy Senior, with the tower and broach spire completed by Thomas Cundy Junior in 1864 and a chancel of 1877–78 by E. B. Ferrey. The listing describes ragstone with ashlar dressings: a wide aisleless five-bay nave, lower chancel, three-stage western tower and south-west porch, in Decorated Gothic with flowing tracery. The interior had galleries on cast-iron columns, marble cladding and a painted chancel roof, and stained glass by Clayton and Bell, Kempe and others.

The nave roof was re-slated in 2013 and the tower and spire repaired by 2017. The fire of 26 January 2023 left the church on the Heritage at Risk Register. The Diocese of London is appointing a design team to integrate the remaining listed fabric into a new place of worship. The parish is St Mark Hamilton Terrace; the congregation continues while the ruin stands.
