# St Mark the Evangelist, Hadlow Down

St Mark’s is a Grade II parish church on School Lane in Hadlow Down, East Sussex, in the Diocese of Chichester and the parish of Buxted and Hadlow Down.

## Overview

Historic England records a stone church with chancel, south chapel, nave and west tower forming a porch on the ground floor, with a broached shingled spire above. The nave and tower were built in 1836 by William Moseley; the chancel was added in 1913 by G. Fellowes Prynne, in fourteenth-century Gothic. Wikipedia records that the church was founded in 1834 by Benjamin Hall, consecrated on 6 May 1836, and listed at Grade II on 31 December 1982.

Fellowes Prynne’s 1913 rebuilding, paid for by Charles Lang Huggins of Hadlow Grange, retained much of Moseley’s tower and parts of the nave walls while adding a new chancel, sanctuary, lady chapel and vestries. The lady chapel has a polished marble altar and an altar-piece, the Magnificat, painted by E. A. Fellowes Prynne, the architect’s brother. The church is open for visitors from about 9.30am until dusk.
