# St Marie Cathedral, Sheffield

The Cathedral Church of St Marie on Norfolk Street, Sheffield, is a Grade II* Gothic Revival church of 1846–50 by Weightman & Hadfield, opened in 1850, consecrated in 1889, and raised as cathedral of the Diocese of Hallam in 1980.

## Overview

Historic England lists the cathedral and attached parish room (1271205, Grade II*, 28 June 1973). The listing describes a cruciform church of 1846–50 by Weightman & Hadfield, with the Munster Lady Chapel of 1878–79 by M. E. Hadfield & Son, in ashlar and coursed squared stone with steep slate and lead roofs. A south-west tower carries a slender stone spire. Hadfield modelled the design on fourteenth-century Yorkshire and Lincolnshire churches, above all St Andrew, Heckington. Taking Stock calls it the finest Gothic Revival church in Sheffield and notes support from the Duke of Norfolk.

The church opened on 11 September 1850, the year the Catholic hierarchy was restored, at a cost of just over £10,500. Consecration followed in 1889 once the debt was cleared. Designers associated with the fittings include A. W. Pugin, Hardman & Co., William Wailes, Mayer of Munich and J. F. Bentley. Wartime blast damage to the Blessed Sacrament chapel glass was repaired in 1947 after storage in Nunnery Colliery. A 1970s reordering installed a west-facing altar, consecrated in 1972. The Diocese of Hallam was created on 30 May 1980 with St Marie’s as its cathedral; a further reordering was completed in 2012.
