# St Margaret, Somersby

St Margaret’s at Somersby, Lincolnshire, is a Grade II* fifteenth-century Perpendicular parish church of greenstone, restored in 1865, in the Diocese of Lincoln, and the church of Alfred Tennyson’s childhood.

## Overview

Historic England records a parish church of the fifteenth century, restored in 1865: dressed greenstone with some brick patching and slate roofs; a restored single-stage fifteenth-century tower with brick parapet, nave, south porch and chancel. The porch sundial is dated 1751. Inside are a double-chamfered tower arch, an off-centre chancel arch on octagonal responds, and a plain octagonal ashlar font. There is a brass to George Littlebury (1612) and a memorial to Kath and Robert Burton (1742). Listed Grade II* on 14 September 1966 (NHLE 1147772). George Clayton Tennyson was rector of Somersby and of neighbouring Bag Enderby; he is buried west of the porch. Alfred Tennyson was born at Somersby and the siblings born there were christened in the font. The legal parish is the South Ormsby Group.
