# St Margaret of Antioch, Bodelwyddan

St Margaret’s, the Marble Church, stands beside the A55 at Bodelwyddan, Denbighshire. It is a Grade II* Decorated Gothic memorial church by John Gibson, consecrated on 23 August 1860.

## Overview

Lady Margaret, widow of Henry Peyto, 16th Baron Willoughby de Broke, returned to Bodelwyddan after his death in 1852 and founded a parish separate from St Asaph. Gibson, a pupil of Charles Barry, designed the church with Geometric tracery at a cost of about £60,000. The foundation stone was laid on 24 July 1856. Names of Margaret and Henry are carved on the arcades; their heads appear at the entrance and chancel arch. Queen Victoria and the bishop are carved as terminals to the east window. The limestone spire is a landmark on the North Wales coast road. Many First World War headstones in the churchyard relate to the hospital at Kinmel Park. The church is in the Diocese of St Asaph.
