St Maethlu, Llanfaethlu

St Maethlu’s is a Grade II* Church in Wales parish church in Llanfaethlu, Anglesey, in the Diocese of Bangor and the Bro Padrig ministry area.

Overview

Cadw records that a church at Llanfaethlu appears in the Norwich taxation of 1254, but the dateable fabric of the present building is largely fifteenth-century. The nave is fifteenth-century; the porch may be contemporary and retains original stone bench seats (restored). The chancel was erected in 1874, re-setting a fifteenth-century window from the earlier chancel. South nave windows are fifteenth-century; north windows are seventeenth-century. The west bellcote may be original but has been reconstructed with nineteenth-century dressings and holds a bell of 1760. Cadw lists the church as a good small rural church retaining original fabric and a fine series of memorials of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, including memorials to the Griffiths family of Carreglwyd. The church stands on a hill-top at the edge of the village with views to the Irish Sea.
