# St Mael & St Sulien, Corwen

The Church of St Mael and St Sulien is a Grade II* Church in Wales parish church in a roughly circular churchyard in the centre of Corwen, Denbighshire, in the Diocese of St Asaph.

## Overview

Cadw records the earliest documentary reference in 1222. The nave and chancel are probably thirteenth-century; transepts and the present tower are likely later, the tower perhaps fourteenth-century. A major restoration in 1777 installed new windows. In 1871 Benjamin Ferrey added a south aisle after the south transept was demolished. A vestry was added in 1898 and the tower was restored in 1907. Cadw calls it a good example of a multi-period town church retaining substantial medieval fabric and fine fittings.

Coflein notes a twelfth-century font and an early fifteenth-century effigy of Iorwerth Sulien, vicar of Corwen. A monolith is built into the porch and a twelfth-century cross shaft stands in the churchyard. The lychgate dates from 1886. Lightning struck in 1984 and the chancel ceiling was replaced.
