# St Luke, Ushaw Moor

St Luke’s is a Church of England parish church on Cockhouse Lane, Ushaw Moor, County Durham, in the Diocese of Durham. It is not a listed building.

## Overview

Local parish history records that the first Church of England services in the colliery village were held in miners’ homes, then in a corrugated-iron church that formed part of Esh parish. After an oil-lamp fire during a service, a permanent brick church was built to seat 256. It opened in May 1918 under the Rev. W. Brown. From 1913 until later boundary changes the parish remained small; New Brancepeth was added in 1947 and later returned to Brandon.

The Church Heritage Record confirms the Diocese of Durham and the parish of St Luke Ushaw Moor, and that the building is not listed. A war memorial is inserted in the south wall, and a west stained-glass window was completed in 2009. The church remains in use, with advertised opening on Wednesdays and Sundays and keyholder information on the notice board.
