# St Luke, Heage

St Luke’s is a Grade II* parish church on Church Street, Heage, Derbyshire, in the Diocese of Derby, with an unusual T-plan that joins a low seventeenth-century range to a larger 1826 addition.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of 1646–61 reusing earlier materials, with a west addition of 1826 and a vestry of 1933. The earlier part is coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and a graduated stone-slate roof; the 1826 range is coursed squared stone with a plain-tile roof and an octagonal stone bellcote. A three-light Perpendicular east window survives in the older east–west range, with seventeenth-century mullioned windows and a south porch whose lintel is inscribed JW 1752; a lead inscription nearby reads G 1661 P. The 1826 west wall has four large lancets with Y-tracery. Inside, the earlier part has dado panelling and a nineteenth-century scissor-truss roof; the 1826 interior has a painted flat ceiling and a twelfth-century circular font bowl on a later stem.

A church at Heage is recorded by 1343. Wikipedia, citing contemporary reports, states that the medieval building was almost destroyed in a storm on 20 June 1545 and that the churchyard was consecrated in 1847. The parish is Heage St Luke, held jointly with St Anne, Ambergate.
