# St Llawddog, Cilgerran

The Church of St Llawddog stands on Church Street at the west edge of Cilgerran, Pembrokeshire, a Cadw Grade II* church with a medieval tower and a Decorated rebuilding of 1853–55 by Benjamin Ferrey, in the Diocese of St Davids.

## Overview

The church is mentioned in the 1291 Taxatio; local tradition places a foundation in the sixth century. Cist graves with thirteenth-century coins have been found in the churchyard, and an early medieval inscribed stone (Cilgerran 1, with ogham) stands there. Only the fifteenth-century west tower survives from the medieval church. Daniel Evans rebuilt the rest in 1836–37, sweeping away the oak roof, rood screen and chancel window; that fabric lasted about fifteen years and was replaced by Ferrey of London in 1853–55 in English Decorated style, regarded as the best Ecclesiological Gothic in the county. Nave, south aisle and chancel are Cilgerran stone with Bath stone tracery; a north vestry and south organ chamber were added in 1865. Glass includes Wailes (east window, about 1854–55). Cadw listed the church Grade II* on 16 January 1952 (reference 11972). It is in the Bro Teifi Ministry Area.
