# St Leonard, Wortley

St Leonard is a Grade II parish church in Wortley village, South Yorkshire, in the Diocese of Sheffield, standing in the Wortley Conservation Area.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of medieval origin whose west tower was rebuilt by John Platt in 1753–54; the rest was rebuilt about 1815 and later in the nineteenth century. The fabric is coursed squared sandstone with stone slate roofs: a four-stage west tower, a six-bay aisleless nave and chancel in one, a south porch and a north vestry, in Gothic Revival style with some reused Gothic fragments. The tower has chamfered plinth, large quoins, string courses, slit windows, clocks to north and south, two-light trefoil-headed belfry openings and an embattled parapet. A reset fourteenth-century three-light window with reticulated tracery lights the south chapel.

The parish site notes that a church stood here in the reign of Henry III (1216–72) and that Wortley, originally a chapelry of Tankersley, became a separate parish in 1746. Interior monuments include work to Mary Wortley (d. 1794) by Regnart and to Edward Wortley (d. 1761). The church is open by arrangement; stained glass ranges from medieval to twentieth-century.
