# St Leonard, Streatham

St Leonard’s is a Grade II parish church on Tooting Bec Gardens at Streatham High Road, Streatham, in the Diocese of Southwark.

## Overview

Historic England records the lower tower, of knapped flint with stone dressings, as fourteenth-century fabric from the church associated with Sir John Ward, together with the west doorway and tower arch. J. T. Parkinson rebuilt the stuccoed brick nave in 1830–31 with Decorated tracery and cast-iron piers. Lightning destroyed the steeple in 1841; the upper tower and spire were rebuilt soon after. William Dyce designed the stone Early English chancel of 1863, executed under Benjamin Ferrey; vestries followed in 1877. Fire on 5 May 1975 gutted the interior. The Douglas Feast Partnership restored the church in 1975–77, inserting a narthex wall, gallery access stair and mezzanine, new seating and organ, a stone floor incorporating older ledger stones, a Chapel of Unity, and clerestory lights. Survivals include a fifteenth-century octagonal font, a brass to William Mowfurth (d. 1513), a mutilated knight under a fourteenth-century canopy, the Thrale memorials with epitaphs by Dr Johnson, and late-twentieth-century glass by John Hayward. The church is open daily from 11am to 2pm.
