# St Leonard, Leverington

St Leonard’s is a Grade I parish church at Church End, Leverington, near Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, in the Diocese of Ely, a large Fenland church noted for its west tower and spire.

## Overview

Historic England records a parish church whose lower tower stages, part of the south wall and the arcading between chancel and south chapel are mid-thirteenth-century; the south aisle and porch are fourteenth-century. The thirteenth-century nave was rebuilt in the fifteenth century when the north aisle was added. The listing highlights the west tower and spire, the south porch and monuments in the south chapel. The west tower is of Barnack ashlar, embattled and of four stages on a splayed plinth, with octagonal eaves turrets and four-stage angle buttresses; newel stairs occupy the south-west and north-west angles. A fourteenth-century gabled west doorway has a two-centred arch and a niche with a figure, probably a priest. The first stage of the west wall has two lancets with banded angle shafts; similar three-bay arcading, the central bay pierced, lights the north and south walls. The fourteenth-century bell stage has two-centred arches to paired trefoil openings. The south porch has a parvise.

The Church Heritage Record places the church in the parish of Leverington and the Diocese of Ely. A churchyard cross base south of the porch and a war memorial in the cemetery are separately listed at Grade II.
