# St Leonard, Langho

St Leonard’s on Whalley Road, Langho, Lancashire, is the active parish church in the Diocese of Blackburn, built by Paley and Austin to replace the mid-sixteenth-century chapel at Old Langho.

## Overview

The new church was built in 1878–80 to designs by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, at a cost of about £4,350, and provided seating for 346. It was consecrated in 1880. The original plan included a larger nave and a west tower with a saddleback roof; these were never built. As executed, the church consists of a nave with a south aisle, a chancel with a north vestry, and a bellcote on the west gable. It is not listed.

The move followed the growth of population around the railway between Langho and Billington, a mile south of the old chapel. Old St Leonard’s, completed in 1557 in the reign of Mary I and built with reused stone from Whalley Abbey, remains a Grade I church in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust and is still used for occasional services. The new church on Whalley Road remains the parish church of Langho.
